The universal motor has widespread application in household appliances. It is a commutator machine with series-connected excitation. It is called universal because it can operate with ac as well as dc supplies. The action of the commutator is to convert the slip frequency generated in the armature windings back to supply frequency across the brushes. As the armature rotates, the copper piece comes into contact with the fixed brush. In a DC motor, the alternating current in the armature winding is changed into the direct current between the brushes by means of a brush and a commutator. In the AC commutator motor, the frequency of alternating current between brushes meets the working requirements.
