Why choose brushless motor for multi-rotor drone?


There is also a "power system" in the entire quadcopter (or other multi-copter). This "power system" consists of ESC, motor and propellers.


The basis for making drones is brushless motors. 

To make the entire drone hover in the air, a combination of motors and propellers is necessary. To keep your drone flying for as long as possible, you need to find a balance between the motor, the propeller, and the weight of the entire structure. Like all electric motors, brushless motors contain bearings, coils, magnets (neodymium magnets for small motors, electromagnets for large motors), a rotating shaft placed in the bearing, and a stator and end cover connected by the bearing.


The important characteristics of brushless motors are KV value, weight, no-load current, maximum current and maximum voltage that can be carried. The brushed motor rotates by obtaining a magnetic field force in a fixed direction through the structural design of brushes and phase commutators. The brushless motor does not have brushes and phase commutators. How does it obtain a magnetic field force in a fixed direction? Simply put, by changing the alternating frequency and waveform of the current wave input to the stator coil of the brushless motor, the winding coil A magnetic field is formed around the motor that rotates around the geometric axis. This magnetic field drives the permanent magnets on the rotor to rotate, and the motor starts to rotate.


Why do most drones use brushless motors? 

This kind of motor has less friction and lower losses than brushed motors. Compared with brushed motors, brushless motors generate less heat, have a long life, have low noise, operate smoothly, and have lower maintenance costs.


The most important parameter of the brushless motor is the KV value. 

This value is a unique performance parameter of the brushless motor and an important data for judging the performance characteristics of the brushless motor.


1. The KV value of the brushless motor is defined as speed/volt, which means that when the input voltage increases by 1 volt, the idling speed of the brushless motor increases (rev/min)


2. From this definition, we can know that the brushless motor voltage input and the motor idling speed follow a strict linear proportional relationship.


3. The first two digits on the motor represent the diameter of the motor stator in millimeters. The last two digits represent the height of the motor stator, which is also in millimeters.


4. Some motors will also have parameters such as: 12T, 8T. This T represents the number of windings of the motor, also called the number of turns.


5. For the same motor, if the number of winding turns is large, the KV value is low, the maximum output current is small, but the torque is large, and the shape of the motor is flat and thick.


6. The same motor with fewer winding turns has a high KV value, a high maximum output current, but a small torque, and the shape of the motor is thin and tall.
